I Tried a Viral Sewing Hack — Then Spotted It at Zara Weeks Later

Ever try a DIY and feel like you’re ahead of the curve — then weeks later, see it everywhere? That’s exactly what happened when I tested a trending sewing hack and then saw a near-identical design on the racks at Zara.

Spoiler alert: my version looked just as good (if not better), cost nothing, and felt way more rewarding.

The Hack That Changed My Wardrobe

I was scrolling Tik Tok one late night (as one does), and came across a viral sewing hack for adding cool details to clothes using a glue gun and thread. It looked high-end and simple enough for the kids to learn. Challenge accepted.

What You Need:

  • Any piece of clothing but we think something with pockets as the design looks great within a frame

  • Scissors

  • Thick thread or wool and a large sharp needle

  • Cookie cutters in shapes you like we used a star and heart

  • Pen or chalk pencil

Step-by-Step: DIY Cropped Shirt with a Twist

1. Select the area and draw around your cookie cutter shape. We decided to use the pockets.

2. Glue Gun

Guide the glue gun around the shape making a tick outline

3. Thread your Needle and Sew

Once your needles has been threaded start sewing Using a circular stitch that goes under the glue line and over. Stitch close to the glue line but not too close as the needle doesn’t need tk go through the glue line just the fabric around.

4. Colour

To elevate the look, we choose two different shapes and colours. Have fun and play around with your favourite.

  1. Finishing Touch

We coloured in the centre with fabric pens but you can cut the middle out for a transparent looking leave plain so see the fabric colour.

And Then… I Walked Into Zara

Fast-forward three weeks. I’m window shopping and — no joke — I spot a nearly identical design on denim shorts on display at Zara. Same cinched waist, same cropped fit, same vibe. Retail price? £15.99. My DIY version cost £0.

Not only did I save money, but I also felt a huge sense of pride knowing I created something fashionable and wearable before it hit mainstream shelves.

Why This Sewing Hack Is a Game-Changer

  • No pattern required – Perfect for beginners

  • Totally customizable – use whatever shape and colour threads you like

  • On-trend – As seen in high-street stores and fashion TikToks

Final Thoughts: Trust the DIY Process

Sometimes fashion inspiration strikes on social media — other times, it’s hanging in your own closet. This sewing hack reminded me that DIY doesn’t mean dowdy. With a little effort and creativity, you can stay ahead of the trends and reduce waste.

Next time you see something viral or high-street, challenge yourself: can I make this myself?

Because when fashion meets functionality — and sustainability — you’re not just following trends… you’re setting them.
